Gloom Warders are Pharasmin exorcists who protect inhabitants of Shenmen from ghosts and other dangerous creatures.12 Warders operate in subtlety as to avoid the ire of Shenmen's tyrannical jorogumo rulers. Although they rarely directly oppose the countless ghosts that plague in the nation, their rites decrease the mortality rate of the living. As the only defenders against the supernatural, many citizens typically treat Gloom Warders with great respect and subtle rewards.

Warders travel Shenmen's countryside disguised as farmers, messengers, or traders to offer protection to mortal communities in need. They hide their religious charms, sigils, tools, rites, and spells in plain sight by weaving them into fabrics, painting them under hat brims, designing attire that folds to temporarily create patterns, or "accidentally" scattering seeds or flower petals.

Warders erect secret spiritual wards around communities by writing protective characters, prayers, and torii gates on small objects, such as grains of rice or tiny stones, and dropping them around a community’s borders.2
