Merge proposal (Closed)

This page as it currently exists is effectively either a navbox or portal in article form, or crunch. Since a navbox and portal also exist, it doesn't serve a useful non-crunch standalone purpose.

Since proposing to delete the article failed to reach a consensus, I instead suggest:

  • Merging the content of this article into the unfinished Portal:Inhabitants, which attempts to replicate the list and definition content of this article.
  • Creating a new, shorter page at ancestry that provides only a {{See also}} link to the portal, a main page for {{Ancestries navbox}}, and a general in-universe definition for the term from the current article's lede:
Ancestries represent the shared cultures, backgrounds, traits, heritages, and lineages of differentiated humanoid species. Ancestries are sometimes referred to as races, though the term can more ambiguously refer solely to biological differences.

This allows the Inhabitants portal, which as a non-mainspace page isn't necessarily bound by PathfinderWiki:Point of view, to freely reference and be organized by crunch groups like edition and major revision, and core and uncommon ancestries. It also keeps the content of this article on the wiki while significantly expanding the Inhabitants portal, which hasn't been meaningfully edited since 2020. -Oznogon (talk) 17:08, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

I like this idea. In general, I don't like this sort of "list" article, and agree that they're better served by other formats like infoboxes. I would like to register that "Inhabitants" is a term we inherited from the Forgotten Realms wiki when we were first setting up the project and using their structure as a template. I don't love it, and would like to propose we look for an alternative term, like "characters," since inhabitants always makes me ask "inhabitants of what?" unless that's specified, like in categories such as Category:Absalom inhabitants or whatever. This is a point I will raise separately in Portal talk:Inhabitants, as it has farther reaching implications to our category structure and such.—Paizo Publishing, LLC.png Yoda8myhead (talk) 20:30, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
Good plan and addresses the issues above. --Fleanetha (talk) 17:02, 11 January 2024 (UTC)
Spun off the categorization issue to Category talk:Inhabitants since I don't think the portal is bound to the same constraints as categorization. -Oznogon (talk) 22:09, 11 January 2024 (UTC)
Disagree with merging with portals, as portals are notoriously underused, undersupported, and underedited across wikis in general. In favor of just nuking the page per your proposal from 2020. CadeHerrig (talk) 05:09, 12 January 2024 (UTC)

Lacking consensus again with a month of inactivity, I've closed the proposal and will stop looking for another solution. The article needs considerable cleanup in order to both comply with policy and become a useful canon resource. -Oznogon (talk) 18:30, 15 February 2024 (UTC)
