Stasian coils were introduced in secret to Irrisen, where their presence is associated with the installation of Anastasia Nikolaevna as queen. The term "Stasian" is derived from Anastasia's name. Anastasia hailed from a distant planet known as Earth, where magic is rare. While the precise provenance of Stasian coils is unknown,1 they are also believed to be alien devices from an alien world that lacks magic.2 The most well-known of the few sources of Stasian coils beyond Irrisen is the smuggler Vaskili Demarr.1

The coils are in high demand in Ustalav, where researchers and inventors scramble to understand and harness the technology for various reasons, ranging from defense against the forces of Tar-Baphon to communicating with, hunting, or deterring the nation's many undead beings.1
