Vipers1 are a type of snake distinguished by the presence of a pair of hinged fangs that can inject venom when the viper bites another creature.2

Species of viper

Multiple kinds of viper exist, whose venom often causes different effects. Different species' toxins may induce paralysis, pain and swelling, blood clotting, or lethal heart failure.2

Giant vipers

Giant vipers are a particularly large type, and consequently produce more poison than smaller specimens do. The larger quantity of venom injected by their bites can cause more severe symptoms than a smaller viper's would.3

In religion

Vipers are the sacred animals of the demon lord Areshkagal4 and of the infernal duke Titivilus.5
