Engineering is the creative application of scientific principles to design or develop structures, machines, apparatus, or manufacturing processes, for instance in the creation of buildings, aqueducts, bridges, siege engines, or fortifications.[1] A practitioner of engineering is called an engineer.[2]

In addition to its core use in design and construction, engineering can be used to:[3]
- Identify dangerous constructions
- Determine a structure's style or age
- Determine a structure's weaknesses, for instance the propensity for a ceiling to collapse[4]
